Bao'an Ethnic Minority

The Bao'an Ethnic Minority is one of China's smallest ethnic minority. with a population of about 11,780, they mainly cluster in the area around Mt.Jishan and Linxia county, southwest of Gansu province. The Bao'an's language belings to the Mongolion branch of the Altaic language family. But due to the frequent daily contacts with the neighboring Han people, they've evolved to using Chinese as their main communion tool. The Bao'an religious beliefs are Islamic. In daily life and social customs, they share the same living styles as the Hui and Dongxiang nationalities in the local area.

The Bao'an people may have originated from Mongolians who believed in Islam. After having lived and communicated with the neighboring Huis, Hans, Tibetan and Tu for a long time, they became a new ethnic minority called Bao'an. The Bao'an mainly engage in agriculture, stock raising and handicraft as supplement.
